The night itself, provides a showcase for students to display their amazing work and activities, currently taking place within the higher education sector in Ireland. Letterkenny Institute of Technology students competed in 7 categories on the night. Each category had 6-7 groups competing for the national honours, from various institutes of technology and universities throughout Ireland. All of the colleges were vying for the coveted accolade of becoming a BICS Award winner 2015. One winner was selected in each category and Letterkenny Institute of Technology Societies contested strongly in each.It proved to be the night for the LYIT LGBT + Society, who walked away with the ‘Most Improved Society Award 2015’, despite stiff competition from Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, National College of Ireland in Dublin and Tallaght Institute of Technology, to name but a few.The judges felt that the LYIT LGBT+ Society showed great passion and energy and that their activities and development in the 2014-2015 academic year could not be surpassed. Ian Smyth, LGBT+ Society President received the award on the night and spoke of his ‘overwhelming feeling of pride in knowing that all but a few years ago, it would have been unheard of, for a Donegal based LGBT society to win a national award like this.’Despite not winning an award on the night the LYIT Android App Society, Gaisce Society and Public Speaking Society were highly commended for their efforts and volunteer work in the local community. This award, for the LYIT LGBT+ Society, is the second award received by LYIT societies from the BICS national body. Letterkenny Institute of Technology societies are now competing at the highest level and being recognised for their fantastic community work and volunteer efforts.
