Former Arsenal star slams Wenger and warns club have a ‘major problem’

first_imgArsene Wenger has failed to learn from past mistakes and Arsenal will again struggle against top opposition this season. That is the view of Stewart Robson after he watched the Gunners go down to Borussia Dortmund in their opening Champions League group stage game.Arsenal suffered crushing losses at Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea last season and, according to Robson, the defeat in Dortmund shows Wenger has still not worked out how to play against elite teams.Speaking on the Hawksbee and Jacobs show, the former midfielder said: “Against the average sides, Arsenal will win. Against the very best sides, Arsenal lose. That’s because they haven’t got a game plan, they are not good enough defensively, and it has been the same problem for five or six years now.“Why are we surprised? It’s the same old thing that’s been happening for six or seven years. Whenever Arsenal play a good side, they are caught on the counter.“The same mistakes are happening time and time again. Everybody told Arsene Wenger he needed another centre-half, he needed another holding midfielder. Your full backs away from home can’t be playing too high up the field and allow people to counter attack. You have to earn the right to play.“Arsene Wenger either doesn’t see it, sees it and doesn’t know how to rectify it, or knows how to rectify it but the players aren’t taking any notice of him. Whichever one of the three it is of those, it is a major problem for Arsenal.”last_img
