Flyers beat Rangers after fourteen shootout rounds

JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John Flyers played an incredibly exciting game against the Spirit River Rangers last night.The Rangers scored the first goal last night, and held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Robbie Sidhu scored halfway through the second to even things up for the Flyers, assisted by Dan Pappin and Cole Calliou. Less than a minute later, Adam Horst gave the Flyers the go-ahead on a pass from Rick Cleaver. Three minutes after Horst’s goal, Brennan Giroux got the Flyers some insurance assisted by Cleaver and Sidhu. The Rangers would add one more to keep it a one-goal game going into the second intermission.In the third, a pair of penalties ended up costing the Flyers their lead as the Rangers scored twice with the man advantage to go up 4-3. Cleaver managed to save the game for Fort St. John, tying it up with five minutes left in the final frame assisted by Jeff Shipton  and Tyler Greatrex. A push by the Rangers in the final minute ended up falling short, as Flyers netminder Troy Hunt made a series of spectacular saves to keep the game tied and force sudden death overtime.- Advertisement -Five minutes of overtime solved nothing, so the two teams then went to a shootout. Sidhu scored first to put the Flyers up 1-0 in the five round contest. The Rangers then went up 2-1 after Shipton and Josh Bruha missed their markers. In the fifth round and down 2-1, Rick Cleaver kept the Flyers alive in the fifth round when Spirit River’s shooter was stoned by Hunt. The shootout went the distance, ending in the fourteenth round when Brody Busche scored to give the Flyers the 5-4 shootout win and keep their perfect NPHL season record.The Flyers are back in action on Saturday night at 8:30 when they head to Falher for a game against the Pirates.last_img
