Sunday blog: Talking teens, local media, the Millers, and Hee Haw

first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Five Cueball thoughts for Sept. 15, 2013…1. Teenagers. This week I wrote a teenage knucklehead story. It occurred to me I hadn’t written one for quite awhile. Heck, as a sports/news editor in the 90s, I practically wrote a story a week over some teen somewhere doing something stupid. Are teenagers better behaved these days? Maybe. In Wellington, there seems to be a good crop of kids going through. Programs like DARE, SCCDAT, and Steve Sturgis website have had positive influences on the teens here. But, let’s not discount cell phones and the Internet either.Today everything gets recorded including bad behavior. Go to a party, drink too much, and do terrible things, someone who hates you could just pop out his/her smart phone and make an instant short film that can be downloaded on You Tube for everyone in the whole world to see for the rest of eternity. Talk about a deterrent. It’s one thing to get in trouble with the law, or suspended from a ball team, or upset your parents. It’s a whole different matter dealing with public humiliation. Big brother is most certainly watching these days. 4. Pfft you were gone.Since we are on a trip down memory lane, I stumbled across this video on You Tube. You got to love Hee Haw. Why can’t we have quality television like this these days? 3. Oops.We have been advertising the Wellington Regent Theater upcoming movies. This week I made the unpardonable mistake of stating “We’re the Millers” was rated PG. I was soon told, no, “We’re  the Millers,” is most certainly rated R and doesn’t come close to a PG-13 rating. This made me depressed — not because “We’re the Millers” is rated R or that I made a mistake. It’s the fact I’m a movie buff and have always kept up on the latest movie news. But this movie fell below my radar. I saw the movie poster and thought it was one of those zany family adventures written for actors like Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin, who are prolonging their careers with Disney movies now that they are no longer being funny.Have I gotten old enough to be that out of touch? How did this movie about about a drug dealer and his fabricated family escape my consciousness? Here’s another depressing thought. The movie Animal House was released 35 years ago. 5. Shout out of the week…This week’s shout out goes to the Wellington High School athletic director Brian Buchanan who had to deal a home volleyball triangular, a home tennis match, a home football game (which was also youth football night) and the huge Hargis Creek cross country meet all in a five day span.Buchanan is probably hoping for basketball season so he can relax a bit.center_img 2. Media event.I’ve witnessed the biggest changes in journalism history. Since leaving college, I’ve gone from typewriters to tweeting. When the Crusaders were going 2-0, I had already tweeted the masses the final score before leaving the press box. In 1992, when I moved to Wellington, my story wouldn’t get written until late Sunday night and read until Monday afternoon.Another thing that has changed is the number of people covering our beloved Dukes. In 1992 it was the two of us, the radio and the newspaper guy. Now, coach Tyler Ryan has a regular press conference to deal with after the game. The radio station, Sumner Cable, Steve Sturgis website, Sumner Newscow, and the newspaper are all requesting interviews. If Wellington keeps winning the Wichita media will eventually show up and that will be a hoot.Wellington is the exception to the rule. No other school at the Class 4A level is getting this kind of media interest, including our beloved rival Andale. Derby— three times our size — has a radio station, a local newspaper, and the Wichita media to deal with, but it doesn’t have two website reporters or a cable company to deal with on a weekly basis.I’d venture to say no other Class 4A team in the state is getting this kind of interest. And this is why sporting a hugely successful high school football team is so important to this community. Because it will be a big freaking deal. Close Forgot password? Other then that quit bashing. I listen to it on kley and watch cow tweets. The thing about the kley you heard the crowd and that makes you do the same at home.
