Governor pledges to resolve felon voting rights issue by Caucuses

first_imgDES MOINES — Governor Kim Reynolds says all pending applications from Iowans with felony records who’re seeking restoration of their voting rights will be reviewed before the Iowa Caucuses.“Right now we have 347 that are being processed,” Reynolds said this morning during a statehouse forum organized by The Associated Press. “Eighty of those just came in (during) the last 30 days. They will be completed before the February 3rd Caucuses.”Iowa is the only state that still bans all people with felony convictions from voting unless they appeal directly to the governor.“If individuals are interested in participating in the February Caucuses, they need to get that application in as soon as possible,” Reynolds said, “and we’ll do everything that we can to get them through the process and get them reviewed and give them an answer one way or the other.”The Iowa Department of Corrections has just begun giving qualified inmates a nearly-complete voting rights application when they’re released from prison. The governor says that will eliminate the background check Department of Public Safety staff have had to do.“There’s a few variables to that, but for the most part, we’ll be able to skip that,” Reynolds said, “and that will expedite the process quite a bit.” Reynolds is again this year asking legislators to craft a constitutional amendment that would automatically restore felon voting rights during the legislative session that starts next week. Reynolds made her comments Tuesday during a statehouse forum organized by the Associated Press.last_img read more

Football: Mourinho rules out Ronaldo move after United rout Galaxy

first_imgLos Angeles, United States | AFP | Jose Mourinho ruled out any attempt to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford after Manchester United opened their US tour here Saturday with a 5-2 rout of the Los Angeles Galaxy.United manager Mourinho is keen to bolster his ranks further after already strengthening his squad with the additions of Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku. But the Portuguese manager poured cold water on the possibility of an attempt to prise United legend Ronaldo away from Real Madrid.“I’m not going to waste my time thinking about players who are mission impossible,” Mourinho told reporters after the win.Earlier, England striker Marcus Rashford scored twice with Marouane Fellaini, Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan bagging United’s other goals in a one-sided victory in front of 25,667 fans at the StubHub Center.New striker Lukaku was unable to get in on the goals after a 45-minute debut in the second half.Lukaku missed one golden chance four minutes into his United debut, with his shot saved by Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe. However Mourinho was satisfied with Lukaku’s “unselfish” display in leading the line.“Lukaku is a target man, he plays with his back to opponents,” Mourinho said. “A good thing today for me is to see that he’s a team player. He’s not selfish. He’s not obsessed with goals. “He was not that worried about himself, he was worried about the improvement of the team.”Rashford meanwhile reminded Mourinho of his eye for goal with a confident first-half display. The teenager opened the scoring after only two minutes, punishing an error from Ariel Lassiter near the Galaxy penalty area to dart in on goal and place his finish beyond goalkeeper Jon Kempin. The 19-year-old doubled his tally in the 20th minute, latching onto a clever pass from Juan Mata to make it 2-0.– Rashford ‘still growing’ –Mourinho later revealed that Rashford, who looks to have added a physical dimension to his game, was still growing.“It’s just the natural evolution of a kid,” Mourinho said. “He’s already taller than when I arrived 13 months ago. He’s three centimeters taller. He’s put on some muscle but without any kind of specific work because his speed is his most important quality and we don’t want to lose that.”Marouane Fellaini ensured United had a 3-0 lead at half-time tucking a low shot past the hapless Kempin after good work down the left flank by Jesse Lingard.Mourinho changed his entire line-up at half-time, mirroring wholesale changes made by the Galaxy.Share on: WhatsApp Pages: 1 2last_img read more

Spurs shed ‘soft touch’ image as Pochettino leaves his mark

first_imgLondon, United Kingdom | AFP | Tottenham have been derided as a soft touch for decades, but the sight of Eden Hazard being hounded into submission showed Mauricio Pochettino’s side are finally shedding their nice-guy image. The perception of Tottenham as entertaining but ultimately flawed under-achievers has haunted a succession of managers at the north London club. But Pochettino has worked tirelessly to imbue his squad with a more ruthless streak and Tuesday’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final first leg suggested his efforts have not been in vain.Tangible evidence of Tottenham’s new-found steely side could be seen in the way Hazard trudged wearily down the Wembley tunnel at full-time.In a bid to subdue Chelsea’s influential playmaker, Hazard was subjected to 90 minutes of intense tackling from Tottenham, who fouled the Belgian seven times — more than any other team this season. While Tottenham were aggressive in their approach, it was hardly the work of a group of hatchet men intent on kicking an opponent into submission.Pochettino wanted Hazard to realise nothing would come easily for him, that Tottenham players would be hassling him at every turn.It was the kind of shrewd game-plan that teams from Pochettino’s native Argentina have often used successfully and it worked to perfection against Chelsea.Hazard, already hampered by Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri’s decision to use him as a centre forward, found it difficult to find the space to flourish as Tottenham crowded him out time and again. The Spurs boss would not go into detail when asked about his team’s treatment of Hazard, but he did acknowledge he was the man to stop. “He has unbelievable quality. He was involved in the game a lot,” Pochettino said.“It is so difficult to stop him. We are talking about a player on the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.”– Glory game –Such a smart yet cynical approach would, in the past, have been anathema to a club raised on the legendary Danny Blanchflower’s famous claim that “the game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish”.Yet Pochettino has no qualms about his desire to make Tottenham more streetwise.“If you think about how we can improve our squad, it’s not only about adding quality players, but sometimes you need to be a little bit naughty,” Pochettino said this week.“We are so nice and in that game we showed that we can be a little naughty.”While Harry Kane, whose penalty winner made him Tottenham’s fourth highest all-time scorer, remains Pochettino’s most valuable asset, it was the tenacity of a well-drilled defence that emerged as the key to victory against Chelsea. With Tottenham searching for their first trophy since 2008, maintaining that hard-nosed style will be essential if Pochettino is at last to win the first silverware of his managerial career. There have been too many moments in Pochettino’s reign when Tottenham have shrunk in the spotlight.Share on: WhatsApp Pages: 1 2last_img read more

OVERTIME

first_imgBILL NEAL :10 Tim Stevens… Leonard Johnson…The Legendary Kenny Blake… and, and, and Sandy Greene—Pittsburgh’s No. 1 Female Vocalist and you didn’t come because it was raining for 20 minutes. Now that’s messed up! And it tells me how old you’ re getting. Rain didn’t stop you when you were young. And it didn’t stop the “100” real jazz lovers that filled up the 3 Lakes Banquet Room. So that you know Tim Stevens hasn’t lost a thing. He’s still “The Ultimate Showman.” And surprise guest vocalist Greg Lovelace put the “icing on the cake” with a duet with Sandy Greene…yep, you missed all that!!! Many thanks to Art Hawk, Meagan and Suzie’s staff and crew for all your help and support and a great summer run!:09 Now does everybody know who Sandy Greene is?:08 Can someone please tell me why the basketball court at Penn Hebron School (off Frankstown Road, across from McDonalds) has a fantastic surface…eight great hoops …and no nets…never, never, never ever has any nets!!! Could it be because of “Section 8”? I am just sayin!:07 A big attaboy to my man James Hurt. He’s about to be promoted to the top level position at UPMC, the first concierge in his department’s history. (For you East Hills folks a concierge is the HMIC, “Head Man In Charge.”) I changed it so nobody’s toes got stepped on. If you don’t know ask somebody over 40 they’ll tell you what it could have said.:06 You need an expert to explain this Original Dream Team vs This Olympic Team debate. I can’t get “Hawk” on the phone, Kevin Cameron …well you know, that Aliquippa problem and we all know Mike Booker doesn’t know as much about basketball as he pretends he does. So you got me. HHHEEERRRREEE We Go! Why the Dream Team wins.No. 1. The Dream Team of 1992 beats the 2012 team “8” out of “10” games. Of the two they win, one is at the buzzer, by the hands of Kobe (you know LeBron won’t shoot it…Neal will you let it go…oh, my bad again! But man them Refs!) The other is a win by ten because the law of average allows it.No. 2. The sheer greatness that is Michael Jordan sets the tone. He’s only the second greatest player of all time. (Wilt Chamberlain…I keep telling ya.)No. 3. Why do you think they called him Magic? C’mon man!No. 4. Bird, Pippen, Robinson…12 rings among them! No. 5. Ewing, Robinson, Laettner…total inside dominance! Laettner with “The Duke Effect.”No. 6. Barkley…unless you got a baseball bat and a gun you can’t stop him.No. 7. Stockton…all time assist leader, duh!No. 8. Magic, Bird, Jordan, Pippen, Ewing, Barkley, Robinson, Drexler, Malone…all part of the 50 greatest of all time. Hey, Drexler’s nickname is “Clyde the “Glide” people! No. 9. Ewing and Barkley still mad cause they didn’t win NBA rings.No. 10. Here’s your match ups and who wins. (Cause I said so) Magic vs. LeBron —Magic; Jordan vs. Kobe—Jordan; Bird vs. Durrant—Durrant (Bird’s bad back); Ewing vs. Chandler—Ewing; Robinson vs. Inquodala—Who?; Barkley vs. Carmelo—Come on ya’ll!; Stockton vs. Paul—Paul; Laettner vs. Davis—Call it even; Drexler vs. Harden—Drexler; Malone vs. Love—Malone (2nd All Time Leading Scorer); Pippen vs. Westbrook—Pippen; Mullen vs. Williams—Williams. Now either shut-up or call me either one. I’m easy to get 412-628-4856!:05 Movie Review Time: “Savages” gets bumped up to 3 basketballs. I went back to see it again it got better the second time. “The Dark Knight Rises” …well no it didn’t. It kinda rised up 1/2 way (rised up…huh!) Anyway it was too long and slow. You can be one or the other but not both. Thanks to Anne Hathaway in the cat woman suit the Batman gets 2-1/2 basketballs. Oh, shut up. You know you went to see it!:04 It’s Steelers Time… proud of you Pirates and keep up the good work. But it’s Steelers time and yes I am ready for some damn football!!!:03 Speaking of movies, and I was. How many times can a person watch “Tombstone?” Well apparently 25 times cause I just did. It never gets old…and yes “I’ll be your Huckleberry”!:02 Mark your calendar for the No. 1 Reggae Band in the ’Burgh and the last summer blast at a location to be announced is coming at ya Aug. 25 starring The Flow Band.
