Guitar Hero is Dead

first_imgTwo years ago, it seemed impossible that Activision would shutter a gaming series as wildly popular as Guitar Hero. The line was a major player in the popularity of the music game genre, spawning countless sequels, spinoffs, and knockoffs. But now, six years after distributing the first title in the series, the gaming giant is doing precisely that.During an earnings call yesterday, Activision quietly announced the death of the line. “[D]ue to continued declines in the music genre,” Activision said in a statement, “the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.”Said the company’s CEO Eric Hirshberg in a separate statement, “We simply cannot make these games profitable based on current economics.” The company will also be cutting its DJ Hero and True Crime lines and eliminating 500 of its 7,000 jobs.
