No scan no flight Melb Airport launches body scanners

first_imgIn conjunction with the walk through metal detectors, Melbourne Airport has introduced body scanners at its international departures terminal. As part of the Federal Government’s $200 million Strengthening Aviation Security Initiative, the new scanners can detect both metallic and non-metallic items.Despite implementing a random selection process for passengers requested to pass through, the airport stressed those who refuse to undergo the body scan, and do not have a valid medical or physical condition, will not be permitted to board their flight. The airport is utilising the same scanners currently used in the US, UK, Canada and Thailand, which are said to emit 10,000 times less radio frequency energy than an average mobile phone call. Those who refuse to undergo the body scan, and do not have a valid medical or physical condition, will not be permitted to board their flight.
