Heating the kettle

first_imgStill flush from mid-term congressional victories and rising influence over budget talks, tea party leaders say they hope to see their movement propel election of their eventual presidential candidate in 2012.Andrew Hemingway, chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire, told a forum hosted by the Institute of Politics (IOP) at the Harvard Kennedy School that he expects the party to be a potent force in the first-in-the-nation Republican presidential primary in the Granite State.Tea party activists already are holding sway over seats and issues in state politics and helped their own Jack Kimball defeat former Gov. John Sununu for the state Republican Party chairmanship in January. Now, Hemingway said, he is fielding calls from presidential candidates.“Right now, 50,000 votes wins the presidential primary, and we have that many members in New Hampshire,” Hemingway said. “And we will be getting behind one presidential candidate.”In contrast, Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator and co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, said her group does not endorse particular candidates, leaving that for tea party groups in the states. But Martin said she sees the movement’s momentum continuing. She said activists will be evaluating candidates based on whether they adhere to tea party values of “fiscal responsibility, limited government, and free markets.”“Nobody is excited about one person yet,” Martin said. “It’s all over the board. Everyone is sitting back, waiting,” she said.Shannon Travis, a CNN political producer and reporter, acknowledged the enormous success of the tea party movement in changing the national conversation to spending cuts and deficit reduction.“In terms of raw politics, what is going to be more interesting is the fight in the GOP itself,” said Travis, who produced an hour-long documentary on the tea party. When it comes to choosing a Republican standard bearer, “Usually it’s who’s next in line. The tea party is going to blow all that up.”Kate Zernike, a New York Times political correspondent who wrote “Boiling Mad Inside Tea Party America” and has defended the grassroots origins of the movement, agreed that “given all the energy in the tea party, it has not rallied behind a single candidate.”The moderator of the forum, Trey Grayson, the IOP director who was defeated in the Kentucky Republican U.S. Senate primary last year by tea partier Rand Paul, said this is a pivotal time for the movement going forward.“They won, and now they have to govern and run on their record, and how that plays out is going to be one of the most interesting stories in American politics,” Grayson said.Martin said members of the movement are far from satisfied with the gains thus far, and with the Republican leaders they elected.“People are so angry still, and right now they are really angry at the Republicans,” said Martin, who is a veteran of Republican politics in Georgia, where she said voters became enraged when Sen. John McCain of Arizona voted for the TARP stimulus legislation just like his presidential foe, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.“People were cutting off the McCain in the McCain-Palin bumper stickers,” she recalled. The wildfire success of the tea party has been fueled by the deep and long economic downturn that prompted populist frustrations with government leaders for not taking effective action to turn things around for many Americans, Zernike said. But like other political movements in American history, challenges mount over time.“The knife cuts both ways,” said Travis, addressing Martin and Hemingway. “You — tea party — didn’t get the numbers you wanted in the last budget deal, and your success and tactics give fodder to your critics that you are inflexible, want unrealistic cuts, and those mostly affect poor people and senior citizens.”Hemingway said, “But this is a movement. We’re not a political party, and we’re not putting out a policy recommendation. That’s for the think tanks like the Heritage Foundation.”last_img read more

COMMUNITY SHIELD: It’s More than a Charity for Liverpool, Man City

first_imgAfter a highly constested  Premier League between Liverpool and Manchester City last season in which the winner only emerged on the last day, both sides will again kick-start the season with the Community Shield at the Wembly Stadium on Sunday. Considering that The Reds only defeat in the league was inflicted on them by the Citizens, Sundays clash will be more than a charity  The 111th FA Community Shield will be contested this weekend between Manchester City and Liverpool and it will be the Reds’ first appearance in English football’s annual Super Cup since 2006, while the Sky Blues will be looking to retain the pre-season silverware for the first time in their history.Tradition dictates that the yearly curtain-raiser is usually contested between the Premier League and FA Cups winners, but as Pep Guardiola’s side clinched all three domestic cups in 2018/19, they will have to pit their wits against last season’s top-flight runners-up. This is a match that largely needs no introduction, such was the ferocity and waspish pace that these two sides went toe-to-toe for the Premier League title last season.Jurgen Klopp’s side were edged by Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering domestic juggernaut by just the single point, while further woe was added to their cause knowing that the highly-coveted gong would have been in the Anfield trophy cabinet in 25 of the previous 27 years – the club’s points tally was the third-highest since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.They lost just the single match – against City and had the best defensive record, making Guardiola’s achievements all the more emphatic.Liverpool did manage to clinch the Champions League title, the last and possibly most cherished  frontier that Guardiola is yet to conquer in the North West, but a first-ever Premier League title continues to elude them.As for pre-season, City have enjoyed a fairly subdued summer compared to their usual standards, competing against more modest opponents rather than the usual elite that comes with the International Champions Cup, and they will be in high spirits at Wembley having not lost a single match in regulation time.Liverpool, meanwhile, have taken on the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla, while their most recent match was a 3-0 defeat to Napoli in Edinburgh. With the forthcoming football season looking set to be another heavily-contested one between City and Liverpool, this precursory match could set the landscape for things to come. And Klopp has already warned Guardiola that his side will be a “different animal” come Sunday, having disappointed at times during pre-season.He said: “It’s a new situation. We have prepared everybody as well as possible. We have to fight at the start of the season 100 per cent with all we have and the good thing is if the opponents want to analyse us now then they think ‘easy job’ – but we will be a different animal next week.”The German’s comments came in the immediate afterglow of their 3-0 humbling to Napoli, in which the Reds were run ragged and failed to really create any semblance of the attacking threat they illustrated last season. And so, Klopp will now be hoping to throw down the gauntlet to City, letting their North West adversaries know that they will still be in the mix for the Premier League title next campaign. But, of course, Guardiola is a perfectionist, so Klopp can expect no post-season hangover or complacency from their opponents this weekend. With the new Premier League season just around the corner, fans will be hoping that the club’s top performers and star players from each side are ready to hit the ground running as soon as they take to the turf. But can we expect both sides to be firing on all cylinders come Sunday? Perhaps not. Despite no World Cup dominating our screens this summer, there have been a number of other elite international competitions taking place across the globe, including the Africa Cup of Nations, Concacaf Gold Cup and Copa America. As such, a number of key players from each side have been absent for most of pre-season and are now enjoying extended breaks before returning to club football. And Klopp has been quick to highlight that he doesn’t think his side would be in peak condition come the weekend, despite the aforementioned comments about Liverpool being a “different animal”.He stated: “I don’t think we can expect to play our best game next Sunday, best game of the season. That’s how it is with the pre-season we had and we have a long pre-season after that but it’s not about that, it’s about winning a football game. That’s what we’ll try.“So it’s a game against City and it’s the most difficult game of the season in any season and you have to be ready. It’s a good test and I’m sure we will have to defend in a pretty good way because if you don’t defend against City, you could get a proper knock and that’s not ideal from our point of view.”“So then we have another five days before Norwich. We cannot risk players or whatever, we have to see who we can line up and who will train and who will play, but of course we have to make sure we have a line-up that gives us an opportunity to win the game and that’s what we try.”For Liverpool, they have welcomed back Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita following their respective injury lay-offs, while the likes of Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have joined the club’s training camp in Evian. There are no major injury issues concerning Guardiola, meanwhile, apart from long-term absentee Benjamin Mendy, while this weekend could see the introduction of Rodri, who has featured heavily throughout pre-season.FACTSThis will be the first time these two sides have met in the Community Shield, with the Reds being the second-most decorated club in the annual competition’s history, boasting 15 wins, while the defending champions have enjoyed success just five times.City’s record against the Merseyside club also makes for pretty grim reading, having only won 55 matches to the Reds’ 104, and that pattern of play has remained fairly consistent even in recent times, with the Citizens only claiming three wins in their previous 12 outings.FixtureLiverpool v Man CityVenue  Wembley StadiumDate  Sunday, August 4Kick-off   3:00 pm Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Falcao penalties lift Monaco out of relegation zone

first_imgButelle’s sending-off forced midfielder Baptiste Santamaria to take over the gloves in injury time with Angers having used all three of their substitutions.Paris Saint-Germain, 13 points clear at the top, will be without Neymar as they look to continue their undefeated record in Ligue 1 this season on Wednesday’s trip to Strasbourg. The world’s most expensive player came off early in the second half in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Bordeaux after hurting the same groin he injured playing for Brazil against Cameroon last month. Share on: WhatsApp Paris, France | AFP | Radamel Falcao scored a pair of penalties as Thierry Henry’s Monaco won 2-0 at fellow strugglers Amiens to climb out of the bottom three in Ligue 1 on Tuesday. The Colombian had missed twice from the spot this season but calmly converted on 43 minutes at the Stade de la Licorne after Emil Krafth upended Benoit Badiashile.Amiens defender Bakaye Dibassy was sent off for catching the Monaco captain with a raised boot in the 90th minute, and Falcao wrapped up a second victory in three games with another penalty deep into stoppage time.Henry said he wasn’t getting too carried away with his team’s victory.“From our side of things in terms of how we played it wasn’t extraordinary but we held on. Fortunately Falcao was there when we needed him,” Henry said.“We must not overreact, we need to continue to work and use the positive aspects of each match to inspire us,” he added. The result provisionally bumped Henry’s side up to 17th place above Dijon and Amiens on goal difference, confirming their recent upturn under the former France star in recent weeks.Nicolas Pepe hit his 10th goal of the season to send Lille back up to second following a 1-0 win over Montpellier, who dropped a spot to third. The Ivory Coast international swept home from a Jonathan Ikone cross with just six minutes gone as Lille snapped a four-match winless run.Nice extended their unbeaten run under Patrick Vieira to six games with a 0-0 draw at home to Angers, who saw goalkeeper Ludovic Butelle dismissed in the closing stages.last_img read more

first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2015)–With a powerful late rush at the rail, Go West Marie easily overhauled longshot Home Journey to take Saturday’s $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint by three quarters of a length under Gary Stevens. Trained by Eddie Truman, the 4-year-old California-bred filly by Western Fame covered 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:12.18.Off at 5-1 in a field of 12 California-bred or sired fillies and mares, Go West Marie shortened up off of an impressive one mile turf allowance score on Dec. 28. She paid $13.00, $7.20 and $5.00.“A great trip,” said Stevens. “Eddie’s done a great job with this filly and I got on her at the right time. I learned a lot about her. I asked him if I could just sit on her and be quiet with her. It worked out well. She exploded with me the last eighth, and I rode her the same way today even though we were shortening up and there was so much speed. The key with a filly like this is they’re professional–let them settle and they’re going to finish for you.”Owned by Peter Redekop B.C., Ltd., Go West Marie ran her overall record to 17-5-1-5. Out of the Swiss Yodeler mare Marie’s Rose, she picked up $90,000 for the win, which improved her earnings to $402,520.“This race wasn’t really our choice,” said Truman. “We think she’s better going long but we wanted a Cal-bred race. Her last race was in open company and this was really our only option for Cal-breds. Gary said he would ride her the same way, just sit on her dead last…She has run down the hill and been on the lead, so really, she’ll do anything. She is just so sweet. She’s maturing and getting so much smarter and kinder.”In a massive effort, Home Journey, who was ridden by Tyler Baze, set fast fractions of 21.20, 42.80 and 1:05.88, held second by a half length over a fast finishing More Complexity. Off at 16-1, Home Journey paid $16.60 and $9.80.Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, More Complexity, along with Marks Mine, were both returned to the saddling paddock during the post parade, resulting in a lengthy delay. Off at 14-1, More Complexity was keen early while mid-pack past the half mile, had dead aim on the leader turning for home but was third-best. She paid $8.60 to show. The favorite at 2-1 with Victor Espinoza up, Heat Trap never threatened and finished sixth.last_img read more
