Too many unexpected pins lead to Crusaders loss of league championship

IV Championship.Now Wellington must hope that Andale will beat Augusta in a dual to share the league title.Wellington would lose 46-31 Thursday evening during senior night. The Crusaders are now 13-6 in duals with one dual left at Circle.Wellington head coach Mitch McComb said he didn’t expect to lose by pins at 126, 152 and heavyweight.“I really thought we would win at 152 and heavyweight, and I thought we would lose at 126 but not get pinned,” McComb said. “If that happens then you take 12 points away from them and give 6 points to us and there is your match.” Wellington was also giving away 12 points to start the match, having forfeits at 106 and 112. Wellington’s Matt Mason lost at 120 to Nathan Moore by pin putting the Dukes down 18-0.That set up the battle at 126 pounds between Brad Wiens and Josh Moore that McComb penciled in as a key match. Wiens got pinned at the 2:29 mark of the second period. Wellington was down 24-0.Crusader Graysen DeJarnett at 132 provided the Crusaders their first victory in an exciting 19-9 major decision victory over Nigel Callison. DeJarnett was behind early, but used a takedown, 3-point near fall, escape and takedown in the third period to pull away for the win.Graysen DeJarnett gets pin.Wellington’s Andrew Horn, at 138, was down 2-1, but got a pin at the 51.4 second mark of the second period.Andrew Horn quickly pins opponent.At 145, Crusader Andrew Pelkey battled Connor Spellman, who was scoreless for the first period before getting two take downs and reversal to win 6-4.Andrew Pelkey wins by decision.Wellington’s Ben DeJarnett then got pinned by Rob Winter at the 1:19 mark in the second period in what was considered an upset.At 160, Wellington’s Joey Haydon pulled off a huge pin over Jeremy Travaille. That pulled Wellington as close to Augusta as it would all night at 30-19. McComb called it a surprise victory.Joey Haydon gets upset win.But things went downhill from there for the Crusaders. Chance Hain lost in an emotionally charged injury default that ended with just 5 seconds left in the match.At 182, Wellington’s Aaron Fair lost 10-2 to Cody Thompson.Aaron Fair with the escape.With the dual out of reach, Wellington’s Taylon Lamkin and Dalton Holt both got pins at 195 and 220 pounds.Taylon Lamkin dominates opponent.However, Crusader Tyson Hodson at heavyweight lost to Blake Aitchinson. McComb said that was a devastating loss for Hodson because it could affect his seeding in regional.last_img read more
