High Time Revives Early Grateful Dead Catalog With Thrilling Brooklyn Bowl Debut [Recap/Photos]

first_imgEmerging Grateful Dead tribute band High Time found themselves back in front of their New York City fans for their Brooklyn Bowl debut on Sunday night. The regional-based five-piece began playing shows in 2018 with a routinely sold-out monthly residency at the nearby Union Pool. After a year of proving their worth for NYC’s Deadhead community, the band finally took the step up to Brooklyn Bowl for a Sunday show which was impressively packed considering it took place at the same time of the Game of Thrones series finale. The band has become known around the northeast for their heady interpretations of the Dead’s early career catalog (1965-1974). For their first performance since February, the band once again lived up to their reputation by turning “The Bowl” into a psychedelic emporium with a mini “Shakedown Street” lineup of vendors even spread out throughout the back end of the venue’s dance floor.Related: High Time Closes Debut Year With Thrilling Sold-Out Show In NYCIn typical Grateful Dead fashion, High Time kept the music pretty tame throughout their first of two sets. The band started their show with sing-a-long performances of “Scarlett Begonias”, “New Speedway Boogie”, “Brown Eyed Women” and “Ramble On Rose”. Once they had the audience’s energy levels feeling more like a Saturday than a Sunday, the band dove into three-song segue beginning with “Playing In The Band” and going right into “Dark Star” followed by “Eyes of the World”. The band returned to a “Playing In The Band” reprise to take the show into set break. The first real jam of the night didn’t come until the start of set two when High Time returned to the stage to open the second half of the show with “Viola Lee Blues”. From there, the show continued with “Mr. Charlie” followed by bassist Jake Vest stepping up for a rare vocal performance on “He’s Gone”. The second set continued with a heady mix of early Dead favorites including “Truckin’”, “The Other One”, “St. Stephen”, and “The Eleven” before finally closing out with “Friend of the Devil”.Fans in the New York Metro Area will get the chance to live out their own high time when the band returns to action with two shows back at Union Pool scheduled for summer.
